Forge of Empires

A city you steer from the Stone Age to the stars, one well-timed collection at a time.

8.3Day ticketWeighted verdict after three weeks on a free account

Forge of Empires is the ride that never closes. You lay out a small Bronze Age town, research along a technology tree, and every few weeks you find yourself in a new era with new buildings, new troops and a new look for the whole map. Twelve years on it still receives content, and the city you start today will have somewhere to go for as long as you care to visit.

Most of the day-to-day is collection timing. Houses produce coins, workshops produce supplies, and both sit waiting until you tap them. A visit is ten minutes of harvesting, re-queueing production and nudging research; the game is built so that two or three of those visits a day keep you moving. Nothing collapses if you take a weekend off, which is the single most important thing about it.

The guild layer is where the depth lives. Guild Expeditions, Guild Battlegrounds and the shared research of Great Buildings turn a solo clicker into a weekly team schedule, and the players who stay for years are almost all in an active guild. Fighting is turn-based on a hex grid and can be auto-resolved once you know your army outclasses the defence.

Fairness is the one place we hedge. Diamonds speed research, finish buildings and buy expansions, and an impatient player can spend a lot. The counterweight is that nothing is gated: every era, every building and every event reward is reachable for free if you give it time. Our test city reached the Late Middle Ages on a free account in three weeks with one event completed.

  • You want a team game that does not need you online at the same time as anyone else
  • You are happy to be plundered occasionally and plan around it

Walk on by if…

  • You want something that ends
  • Era-hopping art changes bother you
  • You dislike any premium currency, however optional
