Rise of Cultures

The newest builder on the midway: slick, bright and generous in the first weeks.

8.3Day ticketWeighted verdict after three weeks on a free account

Rise of Cultures is a Forge of Empires for people who found Forge of Empires fiddly. The same bones are here — a city that moves through eras, research, production timers — but every system has been simplified and the presentation is a generation newer. Workers are a visible population you assign to buildings; roads are drawn with a drag; the map is a painted world you unlock region by region.

There is no player-versus-player. Campaign battles are scripted and resolve automatically once you have chosen an army, so the question is never whether another player will ruin your evening. Alliances exist for chat, shared chests and alliance-wide bonuses, and they are optional in a way guilds in older games are not.

Historical heroes — Cleopatra, Leonidas, Einstein — arrive as you progress and carry passive bonuses, which gives the game a collecting layer the older builders lack. Events are frequent, short and well-explained, and the first three weeks are unusually generous: our test city reached the Classical era with no spend and a stack of free resources still unused.

Depth is the honest ceiling. Choices are fewer and the research tree is narrower than in Forge of Empires, so experienced builders may find it too smooth. The gem shop sells speed and extra workers and is easy to ignore early; later eras lean on it harder. For a first builder, or for someone who wants the genre without the spreadsheet, it is the best-looking entry point on this page.
