The West

A 2008 browser game kept running by a community that never left.

7.6Single rideWeighted verdict after three weeks on a free account

The West is older than smartphones and plays like it, which is a feature. You create a frontier character, pick jobs on a map — chopping wood, guarding a bank, herding cattle — and each job takes real minutes or hours to complete while you are away. You come back, collect the money and experience, and pick the next one. It is a browser game from the era when browser games were patient.

The time structure is actually excellent for people with a job. Jobs queue up, so one visit in the morning and one in the evening can keep a character busy around the clock. Energy limits how much you can queue, and a premium account widens that, which is the first place the nugget shop matters.

Duels against other players are opt-in and mostly symbolic; fort battles are the real multiplayer, scheduled team fights that towns organise and that reward showing up more than kit. Towns are the social layer and still active on the older worlds. The depth is in character building — attributes, skills, clothing sets — and in the economy of crafting and trading, which the long-term players treat as the main game.

Polish is the honest weakness. The interface is dense and dated, the map is small on a modern screen and the tutorial assumes you already know what a browser RPG is. The shop sells convenience and item chests, and on competitive worlds the best sets lean premium. We rate it because it is still alive, still updated and still unlike anything else on this list; just know you are joining a club with its own customs.

Queue up if…

  • You like queuing tasks and checking back later
  • You want a community with years of history

Walk on by if…

  • You expect a modern interface
  • You want to avoid any player-versus-player
  • You are bothered by a premium account that noticeably widens the lead
